Walls CAN talk - Japanese device picks ‘voice vibrations’ trapped in wall board for up to 10 years

If you're cheating on your sweetie or talking behind somebody's back, watch out - because there's a new gadget headed for market that can pick up voices from walls for up to 10 years after somebody said them.

That means your boss could scan your cubicle at the office and hear you trashing him in conversations dating back to 1999.

Or your spouse could scan your bedroom - and find out if you had an illicit lover in there.

"People have dreamed about talking walls for ages and now, at last, with this new technology, they really can," says Yoshiro Nakamura, of YN Electronics, LLC in Tokyo.

"It's an amazing breakthrough with applications for individuals and businesses alike."

"Wall Man," as the hand-held gizmo is called, is no bigger than a television's remote control. All a user has to do to retrieve voices is hold the unit about six inches from any wall and walk slowly from one end to the other.

Wall Man automatically senses and records what Nakamura calls "latent vibrations" that can linger in plaster, wall board, wood paneling and concrete blocks for up to 10 years.

Its built-in computer discards extraneous and "nonsense" noises, focusing instead on volume and rhythmic patterns that are consistent with human speech.

"You can listen to voices at random or program the unit to play only the voice or voice you want to hear," Nakamura says.

Wall Man is already selling like hot cakes in Japan, and sales are sure to be brisk in the United States as well, he continues. Look for them in department stores
